New Orleans North
When visiting our
area most people see: Blue jay, Red-bellied woodpecker, Barred owl,
Winter wren, Carolina chickadee, Tufted titmouse, Yellow-rumped warblers,
Wood duck, Great egrets, Great blue herons, Little blue herons, Snowy
egrets, Tricolored herons, Yellow-crowned night herons, Anhingas, Duck,
Tree Swallow. Bird watching is a popular past time in the area.

The Great Louisiana BirdFest is an annual event of the Northlake Nature
Center

Kitchen Preserve
The boardwalk is only open during daylight hours. There is a large parking
lot and rest area located on site.
Pearl River and the Honey Island Swamp
Pearl
River Wildlife Management Area --(2 miles east of Slidell in St. Tammany
Parish)--This 34,896-acre area is managed for wildlife and includes
a cypress-tupelo swamp and hardwoods. Visitors may enjoy fishing, canoeing,
boating, birding, crawfishing, hunting, a nature walk and rifle range
Fontainebleau
State Park
(South
of I-12 and southeast of Mandeville on US 190)--Located on 2,800 acres
on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain, the park offers 130 improved
campsites, 180 unimproved campsites, nature trails, 3 group camps, a
lodge, a swimming pool and beach, a playground, and the ruins of a plantation
brickyard and sugar mill situated among an alley of towering oaks. Shore
birds and woodland birds may be spotted.
Big Branch NWR
Big
Branch Marsh Nature Walk. Easy, guided walks of 1-2 miles on trails,
levees, boardwalks and forest floors. Big Branch Marsh, Lacombe. 9am.
Free. Southeast Louisiana National Wildlife Refuge, 882-2000. Birds
are always in the marshes.
Annual Hummingbird Banding Event - September
Mizell
Farms, 83211 Hwy 25, Folsom. 6am-6pm. 796-9309 Hummingbird banding throughout
the day. US Fish and Wildlife Service, Nature Conservancy, and Native
Plant Society will be on hand to answer questions. Food, drinks, and
hummingbird plants for sale on site
Fairview-Riverside
State Park --
(2 miles east of Madisonville on LA Hwy. 22)--Nestled among magnificent
live oaks and situated on the cool clear waters of the Tchefuncte River,
this gem of a state park features 81 improved campsites, bird watching,
excellent fishing, canoeing and picnicking. A nearby boat ramp offers
access to the park and Lake Pontchartrain.
Tammany
Trace
Thirty-one miles of this "Rails-to-Trails" conversion are
open from Slidell to Abita Springs. The Trace is a popular spot for
cyclists, horseback riders, runners, skaters and walkers. Koop Drive,
Mandeville. This is an easy place to see birds.
